    Agricola Felline

"Felline" is the name of a vast archaeological area in Manduria, a short distance from its renowned beaches, in which there are the remains of an ancient city and civilization. The places are linked to a legend that still feeds religious rites in honour of St. Peter.
It is said that the Saint, who left Antioch in 45 AD to go to Rome with the mission of spreading Christianity, was shipwrecked and landed on one of the beaches of Manduria. Helped by the people of Felline, he cured them and their king Fellone of leprosy, performing miraculous healings that induced the whole community to convert to the new religion. From here he continued to Rome where he founded the Catholic Church becoming the first Pope in history.

    Production

In 1996 the Accademia dei Racemi was created, a project that developed a new approach to viticulture and winemaking, focusing only on old native vines that were mostly unknown and undervalued in the market. The most important results were achieved on Malvasia Nera, Fiano Minutolo, Ottavianello and Sussumaniello (a grape which had completely disappeared but which has now been updated to be one of the most important representative grapes of Puglia). The project also involved Negramaro and, more recently, Verdeca and Vermentino. The entire production process has undergone a significant transformation after the arrival of the Accademia dei Racemi; thanks to this project, four areas were identified for micro-climatic diversity and harvest times, electing them to real "Crus del Primitivo": ”: the “Terra Rossa”, the “Terra Bianca”, the “Terra Nera” ans the “Sabbia”.

    Products

These four areas have led to as many macro-categories of products. The Primitivo di Manduria shows the most traditional and typical characteristics of the “Terra Rossa”, rich in iron oxides that give it that red rust / burnished colour. The “Terra Bianca”, composed of the disintegration of outcropping limestone banks, is represented by a Primitivo that enhances its fruitiness, with hints of black cherry, vanilla and red berries. The Zinfandel, which comes from the most important American vineyards, is the twin of Primitivo the “Terra Nera”, which has an alluvial origin and consists of deposits of dark soil formed by the degradation of organic material and rock erosion. Finally, there is the Primitivo of the “Sabbia”: Primitivo vineyards that are still close to the dunes are very rare and are evidence of an ancient and unique viticulture.
